MEDICARE INSURANCE

Medicare is a federal health insurance program to provide a safety net for America’s senior citizens. Eligibility for Medicare begins at age 65,  though now it can help younger people with disabilities, and those of any age suffering from permanent kidney damage. For those who are eligible, the full range of Medicare benefits are available. Coverage includes certain hospital, nursing home, home health, physician, and community-based services. Medicare is the largest single health care payer in the nation. The four parts of Basic Medicare are funded differently. In order to get Medicare Part A without paying a premium, you (or your spouse) need to have paid into the system, having worked for at least ten years prior to enrollment. Part A covers impatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility stays, home health care and hospice care. Part B is ‘medical’ insurance, covering outpatient expenses, physician and nursing fees, some diagnostic tests and equipment.

MEDICARE SUPPLEMENTAL INSURANCE

Medicare Supplemental Insurance (Medigap) plans are divided into Plans A through N. Medigap insurance fills the holes in Original Medicare. Anyone with this Medigap coverage will be accepted anywhere in the country that takes Medicare. Not all insurance carriers offer every plan, but all plans are identical. These plans only differ by the monthly premium charged by each insurance carrier. The first step in choosing your Medigap policy is to decide on the benefits you need and want while considering your current and future health care needs. You must already have Medicare parts A and B. If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, you should make sure you can leave that plan before your Medigap policy goes into effect.
